Started this piece on paper the other day for fun. I might have this be a finished piece when done or just use it as a jumping off point for a painting. I'm going to add embroidery soon and see how I like it.

Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977

Yesterday I went to the Art Institute for a cocktail in the member lounge (I know, sometimes I'm fancy) and then I checked out the current special exhibit, Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977. I've never been a huge fan of conceptual art, but I enjoyed much in this exhibit. Ed Ruscha's Every Building on the Sunset Strip, an accordion style book that when laid out is 27 feet long was one of my favorites. The photos don't feature many people or moving vehicles in this dense urban area, making it seem like a ghost town, while at the same time depicting the urban/suburban sprawl in California around the 1960's. The exhibit also featured the hybrid of photography with sculpture, film, installation, and canvas. The work in this exhibit challenges traditional notions of photography and takes the images to the next level. I also enjoyed the photos that had typed out documentation of what experiment or observation was being done; this presentation implicated that these were more than just for artistic purposes, but also scientific or sociological studies. Well curated and a very large and complete exhibit, this is definitely something to check out before it closes on March 11th.

Afterthought - Giclee Art Print

I really am digging the collage style on these pieces from Hollie Chastain in her Etsy shop. The layering and silhouettes juxtaposed with the detailed abstract work is nice. I wish she had more original work in her shop but the giclee prints look like a very good quality. I love to take a peek every so often and see what new work she has.

I've never been to Europe and last week I started to get kinda obsessed with going to Holland (ironic I know...those who know me will get that). The Milwaukee Avenue Arts Fest was a blast! So many great exhibits and we had a good turn out for the photography show. I've curated twice this year and look forward to working on more projects. I'm thinking my next move is to focus on making more work and trying to get a show somewhere for Fall/Winter.

Soon I'll be staying for a few days in a neighborhood right next to the lovely Mt. Charleston in Northwest Las Vegas and causing various kinds of trouble in and around Las Vegas. Now that I have a computer again, I'm hoping to do more blogging. I started this to keep my friend Sarah updated on art projects I was working on after I moved to Chicago, and ended up realizing that if I didn't update it meant I was slacking on projects and needed to get to work. It's a nice way to keep myself on track.

I haven't done one of these 'what I'm reading and listening to' posts in awhile, so here's one! I like doing this even though I am a pretty terrible writer. These aren't meant to be reviews, just a quick 'hey here's what I'm checking out and you should too' post.

I picked this up the other night when Elway played the Fireside Bowl. It was another excellent show and I've been basically listening non-stop to the new album at work (still sans laptop at home). They have some of the best whoa-oh-ohs in punk rock. Pick up the new album here from Red Scare.

Yay! An Orlando band. So stoked about this new album and can't wait to see them at Fest again.

Liz Prince likes bearded dudes and punk rock and draws them in her comics, it was kinda a no brainer to check out her work once I found out about her. I have her web comics in my google reader to read everyday and have purchased and few of her comics from her webstore. Everything she does is pretty damn funny and a good read.

I read this book in about 4 days, solely whilst commuting on the train and during lunch breaks at work. I devoured it and didn't want it to end, I could read Nate Ganglehoff's shit forever. This one is stories about growing up in the Midwest and stumbling into adulthood.

Sooo.....it's been a very interesting week. Last Friday our apartment was broken into and me and my roomie's laptops were stolen. Needless to say I am pretty bummed, but also very happy that no one was hurt in this incident. Every digital photo I've ever taken and all my music is gone. I have some photo backups on flickr and a good amount of my music still on cd's, but those who know me know how much all this means to me and how it's rough to have it all stolen.

My friend Chris and his band Tension Generation played a show that same night and had a donation jar out for me to help me get a new computer. I am so lucky to have such awesome friends! Many thanks to them.

Anyways. We got the Point of View show hung yesterday and it looks great! It was nice to take a step back when it was all done and breathe a sigh of relief. This was my first time curating and I was a bit nervous. I cannot wait for the opening reception on Saturday and hope you can come check it out!

It's been a busy time since I last posted, but I almost have everything together for the show (we hang next week). The zine layout is all done and I am copying it this week. I've run into a road block thinking of titles for it so I'm sure I'll figure that out right before I head to the copy place. It's been stressful working full time and working on a bunch of other projects but it's also pretty satisfying. I haven't had much trouble sleeping for a few weeks now!

I AM Logan Square hosted it's April gallery opening and art swap this past Thursday! It was a great time! I've been volunteering with them and am going to be curating and in the next show in May. It's so great to see the neighborhood arts community thriving and the art swap raised money for the Milwaukee Ave Arts Fest this summer.

Vintage Fabrics and Embroidery

My sister-in-law gave me a bunch of her Grandma's fabrics and whatnot awhile back (oh say, 6 or so years ago) and I finally decided to give it all another look. There is some amazing stuff! Pillowcases, handkerchiefs, table linens, etc. There's also some wonderful embroidery on a lot of this stuff. I also found some great blank pieces for an upcoming embroidery project I want to do, I've been itching to work on it for awhile! I have a few more canvases to stretch and since I end up letting that sit a day between gesso layers I figure I'll work on some embroidery.

This one's actually next to read. I picked it up at G-Mart comics in my neighborhood and it's a blind purchase as I had no recommendations for it but it looks entertaining.

I love zine collections and this one is easily becoming my all time favorite. I got it at Quimby's in Wicker Park but you can find it on Amazon or through Microcosm Publishing

Still working on this Ed Ruscha book. It's a lot of information to process so it's hard for me to find the time to sit down and focus.

Ok, maybe a black and white studio shot is dumb because you can't tell what color the canvas is, but hey, it looks cool. It's in progress anyways, which by the way, is taking forever. This is part of a diptych and I really wish I had two easels! After really seeing and studying the texture on a Jasper Johns piece at the Art Institute I'm really not happy with this background, I need to push it further. I got some weird palette knives at the hardware store today so I can play around with paint application.

I got a "thanks but no thanks" for an installation proposal I sent in to a bar for their gallery window. I was pretty bummed but I need to keep working and moving along. The new Red City Radio album is called, "The Dangers of Standing Still" and I've been sort of feeling that way lately. Must keep working, must keep trying. Also have fun going to shows and hanging with my friends.

So last night I made a necklace! I can't wait to make more, I thought of jewelry designs all day at work today. This one is made with a wooden round chip and a chipboard button. I sprayed it with a clear gloss sealant, but I would like to try resin at some point.

Sometimes the thought of going to live in the middle of nowhere sounds so great. Then I realize that after about two days I would miss being around, ya know, stuff. So I enjoy being able to visit beautiful places like Red Rock then go back to the hustle and bustle of the city.

I survived Vegas! We spent a good amount of time out in Summerlin and Henderson going to casinos out there in addition to the typical stuff on the strip. Freemont Street was neat as usual. I got tattooed at Downtown Tattoo while I was out there! Pictures will be up as soon as I have good ones of the tattoo and other various vacation photos soon.

In regards to the upcoming new year....I don't really do resolutions because let's be honest, who sticks to that? BUT I really need to "get my shit together" and the new year is a perfect time for a fresh start. I'm looking forward to what 2011 brings and what I will accomplish.

Well a few days after the Late Bar gift fair I got a pretty bad cold and it's still kinda lingering. I haven't been working on anything, just been hibernating and drinking whiskey hoping that will finally get rid of this cold. I opened my Xmas presents from Sarah today and she sent me some awesome supplies! Buttons, palette knives, canvas, and so many random goodies!

I've been scanning some sketchbook pages. These are my glasses. NERD POWER. I made some buttons with this drawing and they look damn good, I'm going to make more and probably have 'em in my Etsy shop at some point.

Hope everyone has a good holiday, I'll be partying it up in Vegas! I can't wait for sun and 50 degree weather.

The Ramblings of a Frustrated Artist

Recently I checked out my first episode of CraftyPod and host Sister Diane was interviewing Scott Belsky, founder of Behance. They were discussing his book, Making Ideas Happen: Overcoming the Obstacles Between Vision and Reality. I was intrigued and am now reading this book and at only halfway through I already am amazed with what I have read. I am particularly struck by the Action Method and thoughts on accountability. I know far too well how easy a project can be started and then the project plateau happens. I think my fear of failing gets in the way too often and this needs to stop. I am looking forward to finishing this book and taking all these valuable insights to putting them to work. I highly recommend checking this out, especially if you are a creative professional.

Looks like I'll have to start taking photos in the morning if I want to get any sunlight. I hate that it's so dark when I leave work!

Pieces I am working on tonight. I love these 3"x 3" canvases.

Some recently freed up wall space let me get some paintings off the floor and hung up. I used to holes already in the walls and it created a great salon style wall.

It's been a crazy couple of weeks! Fest/Florida at the end of October and then a road trip to Indianapolis to see Banner Pilot and the Dopamines last weekend. I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things at home and working on some projects I have put on hold due to lack of time/energy.

Hopefully I'll have some updates on some art projects soon. I have an idea for an installation that I've been wanting to do for quite some time now and want to start looking for a place to show it and perhaps present an idea for a solo show.

The texture on a Jasper Johns painting I saw this weekend gave me some ideas for a piece I've been stuck on, so I'm excited to work on that. Meanwhile, here is some of my weekend.

I am sad to report that I have only done some sketching recently and no painting. But I am happy to report that I will be immersed in 3 days of some of my favorite punk bands EVER. I will be at Riot Fest starting tonight (at the Metro) and going to shows tomorrow and Saturday as well (at the Congress).

Lazy weekend

I keep thinking, "I should be painting", but it's been a lazy weekend as far as productivity and that's alright with me. Tonight will be a good night to get some painting done though, I got more 3"x3" canvases and new FW Acrylic ink colors and can't wait to put them to good use!

Today I checked Design Harvest on Grand then happened upon a petting zoo! I feel bad for the animals there but can't help wanting to see them and pet them! Us city folk are so easily amused.

Studio Reorganization

Two roomies are moving out so I took the chance before the new guys moved in to completely take over the back room in our apartment (muhaha!). There's plenty of room elsewhere in the apartment for books so now I have a lot of shelving for my crap! Us artists tend to collect a lot of stuff, I don't understand people who live light. Here are some photos of where I work! Not pictured is my laptop streaming Law & Order on Netflix.

I’m going to drop these lovelies I made off at Lenny & Me today after work. They’re moving my handmade stuff to the main location at 1459 N Milwaukee Ave, if they haven’t already.
